(Seriously, people, my lawn is yellow), but that's not the point here.
Obviously we love Anna Maria Horner's voiles, but also not the point here.
And we very much love hexagons, but even that isn't the point here.
I am really really loving hand sewing. Something about creating by hand somehow fits so well with the pace and quality of life we're enjoying as a family at the moment. Don't get me wrong, I won't be ditching the sewing machine any time soon, but it's so much easier to pick up and put down a handful of hexagons as I sit with Teddy in the garden (read: watch him eat dirt and make occasional half hearted efforts to stop him) or or play in the dining/play room (read: try to divert his fire engine walker from scratching every last bit of paint off the skirting) than it is to dash up and so some machine sewing.
As I mentioned ages ago, I really want to try sashiko embroidery as well, which I think will fit in with my life at the moment in much the same way. I'd really like to try actually quilting in a sashiko inspired style, a bit inspired by this (linked to on someone's blog the other day, I can't for the life of me remember who!). Maybe a summer quilt in shades of indigo.
Whatever form this new little obsession takes, I think it's safe to say you'll see a bit more hand sewing on here in the coming weeks (which, sadly, probably means fewer finished objects, but hopefully theyll be even nicer to look at!)
Since I finished the ball, I'm on the hunt for a new hand sewing project. As you can see from the tupperware above, I've still got a way to go on my charm quilt, but I really want to make a hexagon quilt (the charm quilt will take ages as I'm trying not to repeat any fabrics), so I'm thinking of starting another one. I love the Anna Maria Horner voiles hexagons I made (second picture up top) to go in the charm quilt, but I'm not sure that a whole quilt of them would be great - I think all the great prints would be lost in a sea of colour. It's a shame, but I think that simple squares or stripes are the best way of showing off those prints. What do you think? Any thoughts much appreciated!
As a postscript (in case Adam is getting his hopes up that I've gone off machine sewing), I'd like to add that I'm still pining for a new sewing machine, except I've also added a serger to my want list. I really want to make more of our clothes and everyday homey stuff, and my poor little machine is really struggling with everything I'm asking of it now.
ooh lovely photo's / fabrics / project!
i love hand sewing too it is very relaxing :o)
